Winter Vineyard Pruning

You might notice some action in the last few days at Tumwater Vineyard.

While the vines are still dormant, the vineyard crew is preparing for the 2025 vintage. They are pruning the vines in the double Guyot style, this involves training the vine into a Y-shaped canopy, typically with two main horizontal arms or cordons extending in opposite directions along a wire trellis. This is a popular method of pruning, used in colder climates. This will help protect against frost damage, increases the fruit quality and will help limit disease.

The pruned vines on the ground will be tilled back into the soil, essentially adding nutrients back and improving the quality of the vineyard.

Let’s hope we have another great vintage!!
